Global Health Is on Our Radar: Collaborating with xtLytics

SEP 11, 2017 | BY HIMANSHU GOYAL

There are seasonal triggers for illnesses: Fall means that it’s time to get your flu shot, spring means allergy medications, and winter is prime time for the common cold. Yearly updates can even pinpoint the particular strains and density of the contagions/allergens, but can we do better?

IBM and The Weather Company think we can with our new collaboration with analytics modeling and life sciences company xtLytics to bring advanced prediction to reduce the spread of infectious diseases worldwide.

xtLytics uses its proven 5P insights – patient, payor, physician, product, and pharmacy – and artificial intelligence and machine-learning-based predictive models combined with The Weather Company’s most accurate global forecast models to predict the conditions in which diseases can thrive to properly prepare the population and medical facilities to deal with possible outbreaks.

This revolutionary technology will also connect our weather data with data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hospitals, and socio-economic information to determine potential impacts of outbreaks before they occur.

Weather Data to Reduce Spread of Infection

We’ve seen it most recently with Harvey: History shows that disease outbreaks often follow severe weather events – whether it be hurricanes with flood water rife with contagions or hot, humid conditions perfect for breeding the mosquitos that carry dengue fever and Zika. In India, the onset of water- and vector-borne diseases during the monsoon – malaria, cholera, chikungunya, and dengue – is common.

The life sciences industry, vaccine companies, and associations that specialize in infectious disease control can potentially benefit from such an alliance.

xtLytics has incorporated relevant datasets from The Weather Company such as severe weather, historical weather, current conditions, and seasonal forecasts to provide insights and measure risks for those making healthcare decisions. Additionally, the xtLytics Solution Excellence Center will target improving healthcare outcomes of patients taking medication for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and certain types of cancer (linked to fungal infection).

Using The Weather Company’s data and xtLytics unique 360° analytics approach along with artificial intelligence-based models, the xtLytics solutions and services will aim to improve patient care and experience, better manage inventory at hospitals, and enable end-users to become more aware of their options. The solution will provide a valuable understanding of the connection between personal health and climatic conditions, especially with geographic-specific diseases.

Resources to Fight a Common Enemy

xtLytics’ Solution Excellence Center at in Noida, India, combines The Weather Company data with xtLytics analytic capabilities to better understand how weather conditions affect the spread of disease. The xtLytics center will also help patients make better lifestyle decisions and help train data scientists on weather analytics, life sciences services, and ways to develop solutions for the healthcare ecosystem.
